KYRA IS THE NEW WILTSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPION

14-year-old Kyra Horlock is the new Wiltshire Ladies' County Champion.

Kyra, who plays off 3 and is a member at Cumberwell Park, blazed a trail through the 36 holes on the qualifying day of the Championships which were played at Marlborough Golf Club last weekend. She stayed resolute during the knock out stages, eventually beating Karen Gosling, the current Wiltshire Ladies' County Captain, in the final on Sunday afternoon. Karen, who was playing on her home course, played some fantastic shots but Kyra kept a tight hold on her game and never showed any sign of weakening.

Kyra was over the moon to win the title. She said, "I was runner-up last year and I was determined to do better this year. It feels great!" Her win gives her confidence a timely boost as she goes straight to the English Women's Close Amateur Championships at Broadstone in Dorset later this week.

Runner-up Karen said, after the match, "Obviously I am disappointed not to have won, but as County Captain I am delighted to see Kyra playing so well. She is a key member of our 1st team squad this year and we are proud that she will be representing Wiltshire at the South West Inter County Match week next month."

Another promising youngster, Sarah Gee from West Wilts, took the Gillian Wood trophy for the winner of the second flight, winning a tight match against Carol Main from Chippenham.

Semi finalists in the Championship were Sophie Newman from Ogbourne Downs and Gill Loughrey from Wrag Barn.
