HANNAH WINS ALL-TEENS FINAL AT THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

In a fierce battle between two teenagers, Hannah Turland, Tidworth Garrison, narrowly beat Kyra Horlock, Hamptworth, to win the County Championship for the second year running. Hannah, who is 14, with a handicap of 2, finally holed the winning putt on the 20th hole at High Post Golf Club after an exciting contest which could have gone either way at any time. 13-year-old Kyra now plays off 6, having cut her handicap by two shots with under par scores in the two qualifying rounds.

Hannah's victory comes hot on the heels of a great performance in the Scottish Under 16 Open Strokeplay Championship where she was runner-up, just three shots behind the leader. Hannah's performance there also contributed to a win for England in the team trophy.

Both Hannah and Kyra are members of the County squad who will represent Wiltshire at the Inter County Match week in June when the six counties in the South West compete for the regional title at Bristol and Clifton Golf Club.

County Captain, Karen Gosling, Marlborough, was elated by the girls' performance. "I was so impressed", she said, "not only by the quality of the golf but also by the way the girls conducted themselves. These two are obviously rising stars but there are several others showing great promise and that bodes very well for the future of ladies' golf in Wiltshire".

Another youngster, Charlotte Lucas, younger still at 12, from High Post reached the semi final of the Gillian Woods Trophy which is awarded to the winner of the second flight.

Charlotte was knocked out by Sophie Newman from Ogbourne Downs, a positive 'veteran' at 18, who went on to win the trophy after a close match against Trish King from Marlborough. Trish's disappointment at losing to Sophie in the final was eased by her hole-in-one on the 11th hole during the qualifying round. This is the first hole-in-one in a County Championship since 1984.
