KNOCKOUT FINALS AT NORTH WILTS

North Wilts was the venue on 2 May for the finals of the Wiltshire Ladies' Winter Knockout competitions, sponsored by Chartex Products International Limited. In the Scratch competition, Ali Grandison from Chippenham beat County Captain, Karen Gosling from Marlborough, on the 17th after a very close match. Ali is a vet working in a group practice in Chippenham and keeps her single-figure handicap in spite of her demanding work schedule.

The Handicap trophy was even more hotly contested. Finalists Lynn Willgress, Manor House at Castle Combe, and Di Gritt, High Post, battled over 22 holes before Lynn finally claimed victory. Horses have been Lynn's first love since she was four years old but she turned to golf nine years' ago when her three-day-eventing career was cut short by a knee injury.

Chartex is the UK's leading designer of instruction and education charts for the health, fitness and sports industry and the company has sponsored the County winter knockout competitions for the past two years. One of its products is the golf "fit kit" used by both amateur and professional golfers, including Colin Montgomerie and David Howell.

Chic Carvell, Managing Director of Chartex, was at North Wilts on Saturday to watch the finalists battle it out. "The standard of golf in both matches was very high," he said, "but I must say the handicap final was particularly exciting." Chic is a keen golfer himself and has a daughter who also plays off single figures. He sees the County winter knockout competitions as giving high quality players, who have the potential to play at County level, the chance to keep their competitive edge throughout the winter months so that they are in good shape to start the season.
