2007 COUNTY WEEK - LLANWERN, MONLOUTH
Monday 14th May - Wednesday 16th May

Although ending up with the wooden spoon, the Wilts team showed gritt and determination in a very hard fought week, contending with wind, rain, sun and some very tough opposition.

On day l we played Glamorgan, out to regain their position as no. l after having lost out to Glos in the two previous years. Their team, made up of several Welsh internationals proved too strong for our young and inexperienced team, but a great result by Hannah Turland taking the only point of the day beating ex-Curtis Cup star Vicki Thomas 4 & 3. Vicki who now plays on the Seniors tour is exactly 4 times Hannah's age.

A disappointing day on Tuesday when we lost 6 ½ - 2 ½ to home team Monmouthshire, who used their knowledge of the course to great advantage slotting in putts of all lengths to constantly frustrate our players. Wins came from Jo Shorrocks and Hannah Turland who beat Rona Franklin and Carolyn Pritchard 3 & 2 in the foursomes with Claire Hobbs and Sarah Waugh halving with Chris Harries (Captain) and Rachael Lewis. Claire Hobbs took the only point of the afternoon beating home player Ann Harrison 4 & 2, after Ann's tee shot landed in the buggy of the Glos Captain who proceeded to drive over with the golf ball, unaware of its presence!

Although coming 2nd to Glamorgan this year, Gloucester still proved to be formidable opponents with three English nationals players in their team. Loosing the foursomes 3-0, the singles also looked unassailable, but Ogbourne junior Sophie Newman came up trumps playing top against Gloucester no. l player Jo Hodge winning 3 & 2 to give us our first point in two years against Gloucester.

Some great performances from Hannah Turland, Sophie Newman and Emma Breen won praise from the other counties and great hopes for the future.
